Proportional representation (PR) refers to any type of electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to political divisions among voters. The essence of such systems is that all votes cast – or almost all votes cast – contribute to the result and are effectively used to help elect someone – not just a bare plurality or (exclusively) the majority – and that the system produces mixed, balanced representation reflecting how votes are cast.

आनुपातिक प्रतिनिधित्व (PR with STV system ) शब्द का अभिप्राय उस निर्वाचन प्रणाली से है जिसका उद्देश्य लोकसभा में जनता के विचारों की एकताओं तथा विभिन्नताओं को गणितरूपी यथार्थता से प्रतिबिंबित करना है।

इस प्रणाली में इस बात को कोई महत्त्व नहीं दिया जाता कि सदस्यों के प्राप्त मतों तथा कुल मतों में क्या अनुपात है। साधारण चुनाव प्रणाली में प्रत्येक वर्ग अथवा राजनीतिक दल को उसके समर्थकों की संख्या के अनुपात में प्रतिनिधित्व प्राप्त नहीं होता है । साधारण क्षेत्रीय चुनाव प्रणाली में एक चुनाव क्षेत्र में से उसे उम्मीदवार की विजय होती है जिस उम्मीदवार को सर्वाधिक मत प्राप्त होते हैं । इस तरह मतदाताओं का प्रतिनिधित्व नहीं होता है जिन्होंने अन्य उम्मीदवारों को अपने मत दिए होते हैं ।
